The Bhagavad Gita for Kids: Simple Chapter-by-Chapter Summaries

The Holy Bhagavad Gita is kept as a sacred book in altars by some, whereas some consider it a book to be read once life’s responsibilities are over. What people miss out is the powerful lessons it has for people of all stages of life. Let's today look at the lessons it has for children.

Gita chapter summary for children

Chapter 1: Arjuna's Sadness

Arjuna arrives ready to fight injustice, but seeing his loved ones on the battlefield breaks his spirit. Confused and sad, he sits down and tells Krishna he cannot fight.

This shows that even strong people can feel overwhelmed by tough choices.

Chapter 2. The Wake-Up Call

Seeing Arjuna broken, Krishna reminds him of what is temporary and what is permanent, and thus, there is no point in grieving for what is temporary.

It is important to learn to focus on doing our best, instead of getting scared or upset about the results.

Chapter 3. Acting Without Selfish Motives.

Krishna teaches that we can’t avoid action; the secret is to do our duty without desire.

Get to know your duties. Help around at home, at school, and in, neighborhood with no expectations of praise.

Chapter 4: Learning Wisely and Giving Back

Krishna tells Arjuna about timeless wisdom practiced by great masters: Action without a sense of doership.

Learn from wise people and be kind while working, dropping a sense of doership, because both help make the world better.

Chapter 5: Staying Calm Inside While Doing Our Work

Arjuna becomes curious: How does one purify the mind to act like this?

Krishna says, it doesn’t matter whether a person is busy in daily life or lives quietly like a hermit. What truly matters is what’s happening inside our minds.

This is like doing your homework, helping at home, or being there for a friend, all with a calm mind and a good heart.

Chapter 6: Learning to Calm the Mind

Arjuna calls the mind restless like a wild wind; Krishna says it can be controlled with practice and detachment.

Just like I need practice to learn how to ride a bicycle, I also need practice to make my mind quiet and steady.

Chapter 7: Knowing the Big Truth Behind Everything

Krishna says, the mind calms when we know the ultimate truth that He is the essence of all: earth, water, fire, mind, and intellect. People come to Him for many reasons, and He accepts everyone because they all belong to Him.

When we surrender to Him, we gain the highest knowledge and inner peace.

Chapter 8: Think of Krishna every day

Krishna tells Arjuna the importance of remembering God at all times. This can happen only when we fill our days with kind thoughts, good actions, and helpful habits.

This chapter reminds us to do good and connect to God every day.

Chapter 9: God: Our best friend

Krishna says He upholds the universe but stays unaffected by it, and that even the smallest loving offering is dear to Him.

The chapter highlights that love and sincerity are what truly count.

Chapter 10: Krishna’s Special Powers and Presence

Krishna tells Arjuna about the amazing powers that shine through everything in the world. He explains that anything wonderful, smart, brave, or beautiful that we see is His own power.

This chapter teaches us to look at the world with wonder and awe at the creator. Whenever we see something truly great, it reminds us of the divine power behind it.

Chapter 11: Krishna Shows His Universal Form

Arjuna becomes overwhelmed. He asks: Can I see You in Your cosmic form?

Krishna shows His universal form, filled with all worlds and beings. Arjuna realizes Krishna is the power running everything.

The divine, who takes care of us, is far greater than what we see as our troubles.

Chapter 12: The Path of Love and Devotion

Arjuna asks if God should be worshipped with form or as the formless. Krishna says both are fine, but a form is easier to love. Doing all actions for Him strengthens devotion.

Work in a way that pleases the Lord.

Chapter 13: Understanding the Body and the Soul

Krishna explains that the body is a field and the soul is the watcher within, like a steady inner light. Knowing this difference makes us calmer and more compassionate.

Our real self is this peaceful soul.

Chapter 14: The Three Qualities of Nature

Arjuna wants to know what makes someone wise. Krishna says the mind works through Sattva (peace and clarity), Rajas (activity and desire), and Tamas (laziness and confusion). These modes keep changing, but wisdom is rising above them through steadiness and inner awareness.

Observe these modes and rise beyond them.

Chapter 15: The Tree of Life and the Shining Soul

Arjuna asks how to go beyond the modes. Krishna shows an upside-down tree with its roots above and branches below, where people get entangled and forget the source.

Look past life’s distractions and stay connected to our inner truth.

Chapter 16: Different qualities in People

Krishna explains that people carry both divine and demonic qualities. Divine traits uplift, while demonic ones harm. Since both exist in us, we should nurture the divine.

Keep reflecting on scripture for a purposeful life.

Chapter 17: Different Ways People Believe and Choose

Krishna explains that our faith follows the mode within us: sattva, rajas, or tamas. Even food shapes these qualities.

Take care of what you eat and nurture pure, good faith.

Chapter 18: Choosing Your Path with Wisdom

Each person has a duty based on their nature: teaching, protecting, serving, or creating. Krishna tells Arjuna to do his duty with surrender.

True excellence comes from devoted action.
