There are many deities who are worshipped in Hindu Dharma and Lord Visnu is one of them. There is a Trinity of Gods (The Trideva) that is believed to be conducting the maintenance and continuance of the world as we know of. The trinity includes Lord Brahma, Lord Vishnu and Lord Shiva. Lord Brahma creates, Lord Visnhu maintains, and Lord Shiva end it all when the time is near.
Lord Vishnu is the preserver of life, and he is considered the supreme being in Vaishnavism. They believe that Lord Vishnu is the one who is at the centre of this material world, and maintains the cosmic order. Everything originates from Him and at the end gets back to Him only. In Hindu religious texts, Lord Vishnu is often depicted with four arms, holding a conch (shankha), discus (chakra), mace (gada), and lotus (padma). All these objects symbolise different aspects of divine power. Shankha represents the primordial sound "Om", which signifies creation and the cosmic vibration that sustains the universe. Chakra symbolizes the wheel of time and is an indication of Lord Vishnu’s ability to destroy evil and maintain cosmic order. The Gada symbolises strength and protection, signifying Lord Vishnu’s power to uphold righteousness or the dharma. Padma is a symbol purity, enlightenment, and spiritual awakening, showing that Lord Vishnu is far beyond material existence.
Lord Vishnu is believed to incarnate on Earth in different forms or avatars when the mankind was in dire need. His avatars, known as the Dashavatara, include Rama, Krishna, Narasimha, etc among others.
The spiritual texts of Vaishnavism are many but the most famous or the most commonly known ones are the Bhagavad Gita, Vishnu Puran, Vishnu Sahasranama etc.
The Vishnu Sahasranama and the Bhagavad Gita, both are part of the great epic poem Mahabharat written by Mahrishi Ved Vyas. The Bhagavad Gita is a conversation between Lord Krishna (an incarnation of Lord Vishnu Himself) and Prince Arjuna at the start of battle of Kurukshetra was not willing to fight against his own relatives and respected ones. When the battle begins, one after the other great warriors of the Kaurava’s side kept falling. When Bhishma Pitamah, the uncle of Prince Arjuna’s father Pandu, fell off he did not die as he was granted a boon by his own father that he can choose the day, his soul lefts his worldly body. He was lying on a bed made of arrows on the battlefield of Kurukshtra, when Yudishthira the eldest one among the Pandavas, went to him seeking guidance and answers to questions about the supreme deity and the path to liberation. Then, Bhishma narrated this hymn consisting of 1,000 names of Lord Vishnu, which is a part of the Anushasana Parva (Book of Instructions) of the Mahabharata. This hymn is named as Vishnu Sahasranama, which translates to “the thousand names of Lord Vishnu”. Each hymn mentions a name of Lord Vishnu and describes his divine attributes, qualities and His cosmic role. The Vishnu Sahasranama is considered one of the most powerful prayers in Hinduism and is believed to bring peace, prosperity, and spiritual enlightenment to those who chant it.
