Long, long ago, in the beautiful land of India, there unfolded a great story called the Mahabharata.
In this story, two large families - Pandavas and Kauravas ,were preparing for a big battle at a place called Kurukshetra.Bhagawad Gita is a part of Mahabharata. It is a dialogue between Krishna and Arjun in the battlefield.
But did you know how it all began?
The blind king of Hastinapur, Dhritarashtra, could not see the battle.
So his loyal minister Sanjay was blessed with a divine gift—he could see everything happening on the battlefield and hear the entire dialogue between Krishna and Arjuna.
Sanjay narrated every moment to the king, bringing the whole war alive through his words.
In this blog, we will meet the important characters from this story—Arjuna, Krishna, Bhishma, Duryodhana, and many more.
Each one has a special quality and a lesson that children can learn from.
So come along, little readers!Let's discover one character at a time.
Meet Arjun
Arjun is one of the primary character of Bhagawad Gita.He is the third among the Pandavas. He is a strong, skilled archer and a formidable warrior. But on the day of the battle, Arjuna felt confused and worried. When he sees the people in the Kauravas’ army, he recognizes many of them as his own family and friends.
He turns to krishna and says,“Krishna, how can I fight against my own family?”
Arjun considers krishna as his best friend and guide. When Arjuna asked for help, Krishna shared his wisdom with him—beautiful teachings about courage, kindness, doing the right thing, and understanding our true purpose.
These teachings became the holy book we know today as the Bhagavad Gita.
Meet Krishna
Arjun's chariot is being driven by Sri Krishna. Krishna is an avatar of Lord Vishnu who had taken a human form to teach us the values of righteousness. Krishna is not taking part in the battle. He is there to only support Arjun.Krishna sat beside him as his charioteer, holding the reins of the horses and the wisdom of the universe in his heart.
When Arjuna asked for help, Krishna shared his wisdom with him—beautiful teachings about courage, kindness, dharma and understanding our true purpose.
He convinces Arjun to perform his duty of a warrior and not to fear the death of his loved ones in the kaurava's army. Arjun is awed by the knowledge that Sri krishna shares. He begs Krishna to reaveal his true self.Krishna reveals himself in a stunning spectacle that resembles like a 'thousand suns".It left Arjuna amazed, filled with courage and clarity.
Meet Dhritarashtra
The blind king of Hastinapura and father to the Kauravas. Although Dhritarashtra was the elder brother and the rightful heir to the throne of Hastinapur, his blindness prevented him from becoming king. As a result, the crown went to his younger brother, Pandu. After King Pandu’s untimely death, the administration of the kingdom fell back to Dhritarashtra, who was to govern solely as a guardian until the Pandavas attained maturity.
Meet Sanjay
Sanjay is a minister in Dhritarashtra's kingdom. He is is gifted with the ability to see everything that occurs between the Pandavas and Kauravas on the battlefield and to overhear the entire dialogue between Arjuna and Krishna. At the end of the Gita, Sanjaya proclaims that any one who fights on behalf of Lord Krishna will always be victorious.
Meet Duryodhana
The eldest son of the Kauravas. He is overconfident of his prowess and abilities.Anger and jealousy often guided his choices, leading him down the wrong path.
Meet Bhima
One of the pandavas and the brother of Arjun . He is known for his physical strength. He reminds kids that being strong also means being caring and fair.
Meet Bhisma
Bhishma was the grand-uncle of both Pandavas and Kauravas.
He was wise, calm, and respected by everyone.Bound by his vow, he fought on the Kaurava side even though his heart wanted peace.Bhishma teaches us about promises, discipline, and the importance of wisdom.
Meet Yudhishtir
Yudhishthira, the eldest Pandava, was known as the man of truth. He always chose honesty, fairness, and dharma—even when it was difficult. He shows children that being truthful is the greatest strength of all.
